Course Content

  • Toxic hazards/pollutants
    • Types of pollutants
    • Sources of pollutants – primary (direct emission), secondary (photochemical, nuclear and other processes), wind and turbulence, resuspension
    • Dispersion of pollutants – diffusion, convention, advection
    • Sinks – modelling, mass balance equation, laws of conservation of mass, energy balance
    • Radiation
    • Global atmospheric change – greenhouse effect, global warming, potential effects of global warming
  • Particles and radiation
  • Health effects of pollutants
  • Sampling; methods measurements and sources of errors.
  • Techniques of measurements:
    • Spectrometry- absorption, differential absorption
    • Nuclear/ and radioanalytical technics
    • solid state sensors.
    • interferometry
    • Remote monitoring techniques: Lidar equation, long path, Remote monitoring systems: discontinuous and continuous.
  • Standard for calibration.
  • Statistics of monitoring and evaluation
